History
We aim that the study of history at Woodmansterne ignites children’s curiosity whilst at the same time giving them a broad and balanced view of their local area, the history of Britain and other societies and eras.
We want children to develop a well-rounded knowledge of the past and its events, with the intention to improve their cultural capital, understanding of the world around them and their own heritage.
Children take part in engaging, purposeful learning that allows them the opportunity to develop their reading skills and exposure to texts through research and discover a wide range of high-quality vocabulary through their investigations and explorations of new topics and sources.
History is taught in conjunction with other humanities-based subjects, so that it is relevant and an exciting exploration of the past whilst broadening children’s understanding of the chronological concept of change over time.

Implementation
Within each year group there is a clear progression of skills, as set out in the National Curriculum, which build on prior learning and further extend this knowledge at an appropriate level for the child. We teach history through our carefully constructed Learning Experience projects which are a sequence of lessons which develop both knowledge and skills and work towards a creative project with a clearly defined end product.
